The second episode of this season is an insane spaghetti western that will delight gastrophiles. The pitch? In the fight against the rampant threat of Triads, two clans have decided to join forces. An improbable marriage between Don Salvatore Rotiroti, Le Fooding Guide’s 2014 best pizzaiole, the boss of Il Brigante… And Sardinian chef Simone Tondo, the godfather of Roseval (winner of Le Fooding Guide’s 2013 best restaurant award). Up against a wall, our two maestros will have to outdo themselves to develop a four-handed pizzanomic menu. Italian accents and shots fired in the kitchen guaranteed!

Last week was the private opening of  the “Très Particulier”. For two nights, the brand new cocktails bar of the Hotel Particulier Montmartre, received friends, press and fashion crowd to celebrate. Oscar Comtet, Hotel CEO, and Pierre Lacroix, Project Architect, host that launching night to present, after over year of thought and architectural work, the birth of their creation. A new nightlife place that old Montmartre probably needed…

It was about time…
Shut down in 1939, the Ornano train station has been finally given a second life by the crew from Le Comptoir General.
Located way uptown at Porte de Clignancourt in the 18th, just 5 minutes away from the famous flea markets, La REcyclerie is one of the most exciting new additions to the right bank. It houses a bar/restaurant with high ceilings, upcycled decor, large bay windows with a nice view on the old rails, and a huge green terrasse on the station platform.
Brunch includes 1 set-menu choice, self-service with bottomless coffee for about 20€.
Despite all of the bobo clichés (organic farmer bullshit, ecological blabla, pop-up food trucks, the name…), La REcyclerie is absolutely unique in Paris and probably the ideal post-vintage shopping brunch (or there’s always the brand-new gigantic KFC one block away).

The art of eating and drinking in Paris is equally as important as the art practiced by those providing the nourishment. A six-ingredient cocktail, for instance, should be sipped leisurely, not thrown back in one gulp like a shot or guzzled like a beer. A plate of spiced duck tartare with a side of Thai coleslaw should be thoughtfully chewed and savored, not scarfed down like a street crêpe to cure a quick faim. Likewise, the care that goes into creating cocktails and innovative cuisine needs to be skillfully applied by masters of their trade, otherwise known as artisans.

Relative SoPi newcomer Artisan is all about good food and beverage, while providing a classy, relaxed setting for those looking to hone their consumption skills. Opened up by the guys behind La Maison Mère (Thomas Kolnikoff and John Sellam) in collaboration with seasoned bartender Frédéric Le Bordays, the bar is a rustic refuge for neighborhood locals and well-heeled twenty- to thirty-somethings wanting to take the edge off.

Brick and wood accents complement minimalist surroundings with old-fashioned décor, while laid-back tunes and friendly servers make for a chill atmosphere, ideal for hanging out with friends, colleagues or casual dates.

The wraparound bar and high-top tables up front are prime spots for sharing a bottle of natural wine or testing out Frédéric’s imaginative cocktail list, composed of revisited classics and perfected modern recipes. His cocktail prowess runs so deep that he has released his own book, “Les Nouveaux Cocktails Classiques,” which might as well be referred to as the new Bible for budding amateur bartenders.

No apéro is complete without something to munch on, which is where the menu of prepared small plates comes in. The selection encompasses a variety of artfully presented gourmet dishes made with in-season ingredients suitable for all appetites. Currently up for taste testing : Galician mussels with salted butter and spinach, a shaved pile of 16-month matured Jambon de Bayonne, a serving of creamy burrata with tomatoes and roquette relish, a refashioned Croque Signore topped with caponata, ricotta and jambon blanc, and a juicy cut of seared red tuna perched on a bed of niçoise-inspired garnishes, among others.

Unlike the other tapas & cocktail ventures of its kind, Artisan refreshes everything on its menu every three weeks. That means new wines, new beers, new cocktails and new epicurean delicacies to try out each month, and on top of that, the bar is now open for Sunday brunch with a “terre and mer” theme, based around seafood and earthy dishes made with artisanal products.

The 25-euro formule gets you two savory dishes au choix, dessert, a detox cocktail or fresh-squeezed juice and exotic filtered coffee or tea. Pair the parmentier de canard (terre) with a brandade de cabillaud (mer), a homemade waffle with a side of chocolate sauce and Chantilly cream for dessert and a Courgette Power detox cocktail. That plus Tanzanian Arabica espresso, and you’ve found yourself a new haven for Sunday hangovers.

What do you do when tu as la dalle and you’re stuck in Pigalle ? Just say no to the ubiquitous kebab and crêpe stands because there’s a new Japanese cantine in the neighborhood that’s serving up a tasty, affordable antidote to your roaring faim.

Peco Peco, which non-incidentally is a Japanese expression to indicate feeling quite ravenous, steps outside of the Bento box with a crunchy new take on brochettes and a menu that does out-of-the-ordinary things with Wasabi and bread crumbs.

Specializing in Donburi (rice bowls) during the day and Kushiagé (breaded meat or veggie skewers) at night, the cozy eatery niched away on rue Jean Baptiste Pigalle is a refreshing, authentic alternative to the old sushi standbys, swapping out raw fish for cooked and crispy delicacies.

For lunch, sit down to a bowl of fried chicken, teriyaki salmon or vegetarian Donburi, each garnished with colorful, exotic ingredients on a bed of fluffy white rice. Or make it a baguette Katsusandwich filled with breaded pork and red cabbage dressed in the house BBQ sauce. If you’re still hungry, dig into the homemade sesame mocha panna cotta or the lemon quatre-quart to finish.

When night falls, the menu shifts to Kushiagé with a well-rounded selection of fried veggie, meat, seafood and cheese brochettes plunked down into a wooden serving block for sharing or hoarding. We tried a few from each category and were especially pleased with the Shiitake mushroom, pork, bacon-wrapped asparagus, honeyed goat cheese and Wasabi chicken. Neither overly greasy nor too heavy, the breading’s crackly texture balances nicely with the soft, steaming interior goodness.

Three to four skewers per person makes for a satisfying meal accompanied by any of the sides, which include Edamame beans (also served as a healthy amuse-bouche), Yaki Onigri (grilled rice ball), Daikon salad, or a half-portion of the Katsusandwich.

Run by Benjamin (previously chez Les Pères Populaires) and his buddy, Chef Kenji (Nippon native and former pastry chef at Fogon and Ze Kitchen Galerie), the restaurant provides that kind of homey, relaxing backdrop ideal for a casual date or a family-style meal with friends.

With miniscule prices, you can dine like a Parisian pauper and leave with the belly of a king, so the next time you tell yourself “Miso hungry,” remind yourself the correct phrase is “Peco Peco,” and give the place a try.

L’Hotel du Temps is all we expect from a trendy hotel: fully booked during fashion week, lo-fi meets art nouveau vibe, actors with their laptops drinking fresh-squeezed orange juice at breakfast, and, of course, a chill piano bar/cave for enjoying cocktails, which can transition into a festive vibe for special occasions, as has happened for parties organized by la Clique or Iconoclast.

So, new dives in new dirty areas are needed for hipsters who want to stay together talking about beards, Canadian bonnets, and hip hop… And the answer is le Blue, which just opened! Old school hipsters (David Belloeil, Arthur Castillon, Adrien Moisson…) have taken over the Blue Note, the mythic jazz club between Chateau Rouge and Barbes, two of the dirtiest metro station areas of Paris.

Better than the notorious blue love pills, this spot will restore hipsters’ hope in Parisian nightlife, with the coolest DJs in town, bearded men, cheap booze, a dance floor, neon lights, and girls too wasted to talk. So come try le Blue fast before lamestreamers invade Barbes and open a Barbes Country Club or other preppy themed rock clubs !!

In the case of Pigalle’s recently opened Buvette, consider owner, Jody Williams, the butcher’s apprentice. The American restauranteuse has brought her West Village success to Paris, where maybe the only characteristics that distinguish it from its NYC counterpart are the neighborhood prostitutes and the porn shops down the street.

 

The charming, rustic parlor-like setting makes a striking contrast to the usual gritty Pigalle establishments, with its exposed brick walls, sleek wood finishes and marble countertop bar. A chalkboard map of wine regions graces one wall, while the rest are neatly adorned with antique embellishments that make the place worthy of Pinterest design boards across the world.

A hefty chunk of jambon sits on the edge of the bar for shaving, next to stacked dishware, a tower display of enticing viennoiseries and a huge bowl of butter that will have you already thinking about how you’re going to repent for your gastronomic sins. Behind the bar and below the neat displays of copious wine bottles sit jars and bowls of various garnishes and ingredients, in addition to a gauffre machine turning out crispy golden waffles every five minutes.

The decidedly French menu is short and sweet and composed to your liking. Keep in mind that the place is a self-dubbed ‘Gastrothèque,’ so if you’ve got a big appetite, expect to double or triple up on the various small plates available or order a bunch to share.

Start off with tartines slathered in walnut pesto and parmesan or the elusive kale simmered with pine nuts and raisins to a spreadable consistency. If you’re a Croque person, get a stacked twist on the classic Monsieur/Madame, or opt for the Forestier topped with sauteed mushrooms and melted Gruyère.

Diet-conscious foodies and vegetarians are hardly excluded, with lighter fish and egg options, salads and simple yet done right veggie variations, such as roasted beetroot topped with almonds and horseradish and leeks drizzled in a Dijon vinaigrette.

French staples Hachis Parmentier and rabbit confit discreetly flank the small two-sided carte, and off-menu daily specials are also available.

If after all that, you can’t tear your eyes away from the enormous bowl of mousse au chocolat being swirled and folded onto plates around you and topped with a generous dollop of homemade whipped cream, you might as well just say to yourself ‘laisses tomber’ and go for it, with YOLO echoing in your ears after every succulent spoonful.

Of course a ‘buvette,’ by definition, is more related to liquid nourishment, so if you’re feeling thirsty, dive into the extensive drink menu that resembles an old-fashioned pocketbook, complete with illustrations and detailed descriptions of the cocktails and wines at your disposal.

Think of Buvette as the new Paris-New York hybrid — French in theory with Manhattan allure. It’s open all day for your petit déj, your lunches or late brunches, your wine and cheese apéros or your affordable dinner dates before heading out into the Pigalle periphery, with Glass, Dirty Dick and Carmen awaiting your late-night delires.

Dirty Dick- Opening

Dirty Dick at Place Pigalle has finally reopened its door last night. Inside you’ll no longer find Madame Tamor or exotic asses, well maybe on a good night, but a tiki themed watering hole with strong fucking drinks, bowls and beer sent all the way from Rogue Brewery over in the good old U.S of A. What is a bowl? It’s a frighteningly quick (and tasty) way to not remember your night with a few friends. I suggest you stop by and ask for The Cannibal’s Dilemma or the Amazombie bowl.

Everybody has to start somewhere. But don’t worry, the guys behind Les Novices, former alumni of Hotel du Nord, seem to know what they’re doing. In fact, these new kids on the block are breathing new life and energy into the quiet restaurant strip of the Lamarck neighbourhood. With cosy booths, a nice terrasse, and a trained mixologist behind the bar, this neo-bistro might be the perfect spot for a weekly catch-up with the playground gang. You can even cram 20 around the enormous “table d’hôte” in the back (for those overcrowded reunions or special occasions). The biggest plus though: it’s open late every day of the week, so you can finally have a real meal with your mates way into the wee hours of the night, or maybe take out one of your “special” friends…

The menu revisits comfort food staples and childhood classics like vegetable lasagna, osso bucco, bangers and mash (for you Brits) or your grandma’s rice pudding, but gives them a grown-up presentation and a sophisticated finish. Les Novices’ generous New York-style burger earns solid marks, though in our book, their plate of melt-in-your-mouth beef cheeks, served on a bed of miniature tube pasta, deserves extra credit. Vintage collector’s items and a swanky modern design make up the restaurant’s elegant decor, but the service, led by owner Cedric, a true kid-at-heart, is warm and friendly, which makes for the kind of casual and non-pretentious dining experience we like. A perfect mix of old school and new cool, could this be the “resto de la rentrée”?

A few weeks ago Lionel bought l’Embuscade, adding it to his list of nightlife spots that includes le Baron (Paris/London/NYC/ Tokyo), Chez Moune, la Fidelité, etc… The bar is much cleaner, the TV and the child sleeping on the sofa have disappeared, and the weird rum bottles are not longer on the cocktail menu. Now we can expect musical performances, cocktails that don’t make you sick, and (who knows?) maybe a fashion week after-party.

This bold new entry into the SoPi dining scene is dedicated to reviving the most sacred of all cooking methods—call it the Renaissance of braising. The interior, a blend of retro-mod and contemporary-industrial, is sleek, sexy, unabashedly swanky, and the food is cutting-edge. In what looks like a seventies’ California roadside kitchen, Braisenville’s prized oven sits in plain view, which is lucky for you, because this is where the magic happens.

As the name implies, most components of the restaurant’s dishes undergo a familiar process, a sort of culinary rite of passage: seared, and then stewed slowly to reach a mouth-watering climax. On the whole, the ever-changing menu plays up contrasts between light and savoury. A fresh, bright ceviche floating in cucumber water can be sampled alongside an earthy, lush wild mushroom and root vegetable purée.

The ambiance of the restaurant is convivial: all plates are made for tasting (half the menu is à partager and half is à deguster) while a wall-length banquette, a countertop bar, and a lofty, clean space make for plenty of standing room and encourage intergroup mingling. A place for lovers and friends, Braisenville seems to abide by two credos: 1) patience is a virtue and 2) sharing is caring. Hey, maybe you’ll even make enough friends to order the chef’s colossal masterpiece: the black angus côte de bœuf. Ohhh, the art of braise.
