A perfect opportunity for the two American designers Sarah Nusz & Sara Driscoll, to bring back Summer in their Parisian showroom with press, artists and influencers. A picnic scene was created for the two collection ambassadors, Alexandra Vallet & Maryon Bertrand to wear outfits from the upcoming collection all night long, while DJ Bel Air Sounds (Cielle et Kwame) spread out sunny pop music. Last Friday, Ground Effect hosted a private party in the heart of Paris. 

Ground Effect is a street-art gallery located in a hidden place by Grands Boulevards.

Halfway between the art gallery and the artist’s studio, the purpose of Ground Effect is to promote new urban artists while keeping their own identity.
From frescoes, photos and sculptures, the gallery want to bring some diversity, not only with the artwork but also with their visitors.

Last night the Elegant, Wild and Vibrant hotel Renaissance République celebrated their first birthday! For this special occasion they recieve Kouka, Sifat, Erell, Ernesto Novo, and Ezk for a street art performance, dedicated to WWF. During the night, guests could also watch « by R » painting in live a hudge golden tree on the facade of the hotel, in a black room there was sessions of light painting with re one, and a live music set by Elvinci&Co. A great way to discover this beautiful hotel, located at 40 rue René Boulanger, Paris 10e.

A few nights ago was the pre-opening party of the brand new club SALÒ.
On the ashes of ex parisian hipsters Mecca -Social Club- the guys from Manifesto (who owns Nuits Fauves and Silencio), decided to create an artistic club dedicated to alternative movement and attached  to counterculture, independent and free thinking.
The club will have every week a new host, an artist who gonna create a new visual/sound scenery and schedule shows, performances and live gigs. The art direction will be run by Flash cocotte team (Anne-Claire Gallet). By the way, Abel Ferrara was the evening godfather…

Last night CHMPGN took over hip famous fashion magazine WAD to celebrates the launching of their latest capsule collection « Anti Valentine’s » caps and socks!

From the good people of Pink Flamingo, Floyd’s Bar and Grill is bringing a healthy dose of American BBQ culture to the sad kebab stands of Strasbourg Saint-Denis.

In front, you’ll enter a dark, handsome cocktail bar. But make your way back and you’ll suddenly find yourself in a bright and airy dining room, almost like a chic Route 66 pit stop.

The menu is nostalgic with only the best of the US: grilled-corn chowder, prime rib (for two), Kansas City ribs, pecan pie, bourbon bread pudding, and cheesecake… Who says Americans don’t make good food? There is just one “so-British” exception: the giant roast they serve up on Sundays.

The Oysters Rockefeller are a must-have. For the more adventurous, we recommend the “Rabbit & Waffle,” which would make Roscoe’s wish they had thought of it first. At Floyd’s, chef Jamie Young is aiming for one thing: glory cooking. Does he succeed? Hands down, because those Kansas City ribs are finger lickin’ good.

Some of the best news of the past few weeks is the opening of LE BALLON FC, a pop-up bar that will screen all of the matches live during the World Cup.

For a month, L\INCONNU will be transformed into football supporter heaven with: televisions, a movie theatre in the cave, table football competitions, and a historic football library.

Half-time snacks at Le Ballon will include Paris’ best fish & chips from The Sunken Chip, and a “Jambon-Beurre” sandwich made from the finest local products.

Despite minor uprisings of vegan and vegetarian rebels, Paris is still a carnivore’s capital, where the battle of the boeuf is raging on with burger bars, steakhouses and meaty sandwich joints throwing punches left and right to make it to the next round. But not every viande is made equal. And there are fewer disappointing things in the realm of first-world problems than a tough, overcooked entrecôte or a rubbery, unmemorable bistro burger served with soggy frites. That’s just…bof.

Enter the newest beefy contender, John Viande, who’s showing more than enough meat flex to stand up to his bloody competitors.

Recently settled into the burgeoning rue de Paradis, this casual, modern gastropub is hard to classify — not quite totally hipster yet undeniably à la mode. Regardless, co-owners Alex and Aurélien pull off the final result well, which is essentially a relaxed bar and eatery that offers people a place to chill, mingle, see and be seen in a one-for-all atmosphere sans affectation.

Although the main dining room and bar area has a decidedly masculine air with authentic animal skulls mounted on the walls and a gentleman’s pub kind of feel, the dimmed lighting, brick walls and tasteful wood furnishings make it perfectly appropriate for bringing your meuf around or for eventually crossing a pack of meat-loving Parisian she wolves at the bar.

The second dining room below is slightly more cozy and quieter with larger tables to accommodate groups. But all that takes backseat to the menu, filled with succulent meat dishes in every form, inventive burgers and a wine/cocktail list that heavily suffices as liquid accompaniment (plus beer on tap, of course).

The carte features prime meats mainly of French origin, but when chef Aurélien can get ahold of some good Scottish or English cuts, he’s not one to refuse. If you have any hesitations or know nothing about beef, don’t hesitate to ask for his guidance. He can tell you which kind is in season, when and how it’s prepared, down to every last fleshy detail.

The cuisine is a creative amalgam of regional-inspired recipes, including tender duck filet cooked with sichuan beads and arranged neatly over a pile of potatoes prepared à la Sarladaise, sliced Pata Negra and fried egg on a bed of Padron peppers from the Galicia region, beef tartare flavored with parmesan, olive oil and shallots, and the generous onglet de boeuf to be drizzled or drenched in a Fourmé d’Albert cheese sauce, flanked with a salad and homemade fries. Dressed-up raviolis, a baked egg dish, and foie gras round out the starter options.

If you’re fiending for a burger, select any of the six original recipes. We’re already planning a return trip to test the Umami topped with ricotta doused in truffle oil, onion confit, slow-roasted tomatoes and portobello mushrooms. If you have simpler tastes, try the Simple Jack with American cheese, spring onions, and Jack Daniels’ secret sauce.

While Aurélien is busy prepping your food in the kitchen, his associate Alex will take care of all your liquid nourishment, as he pops bottles and slings his original cocktails behind the impressive wood bar. On weekend nights (starting with Thursday Afterworks), you can stick around after dinner for some prolonged papotage in a pub-like atmosphere that isn’t crawling with Anglos or tourists.

Bottom line ? The food and drinks here are seriously good, but it’s not a place where you have to take yourself seriously. And if you’re thinking of giving up meat anytime soon, at least visit John Viande once before you do. You just might give it a second thought…

Rest assured, it’s not a place whose seeds are freshly planted and need time to grow. Let’s call it more of an uprooting and dissemination of talent, as former head chef of Racines 2 Nicolas Gauduin has brought his team to Paradis and literally puts paradise on your plate.

Formally trained by Alain Passard and consequently an alum of l’Arpège where he worked under the master chef for seven years, the young talent has garnered a reputation for his excellence in the kitchen and still remains completely down to earth.

Working alongside sous-chef Damien Ruffier, Nicolas churns out a menu of refined French classics in generous portions and at more than reasonable prices. If you thought it wasn’t possible to find all that in one place, you should hike it on over to Paradis and prove yourself wrong.

Begin indulging with the Duperier Foie gras “extra” mi-cuit, garnished with passion fruit jelly, a dusting of café and grilled bread crisps. Or taste it in liquid form, blended into a creamy butternut soup made with star anise and croutons.

Follow with the Saint-Jacques mi-cuites to perfection in shellfish juice whisked with beurre. Eat it slowly enough, otherwise you’ll be sad when it’s all gone.

Options for the veggie-inclined include a gratin composed of mild Cévennes onions, organic parmesan and chard or a plate of buttered winter vegetables.

If you’re more about the meat, do not pass up the rack of Iberian pork à la plancha (grilled on a metal plate). You can cut through it like butter, it’s that succulent — and the food orgy continues with herbed mashed potatoes, sautéed spinach and trompette mushroom cream on the side.

Round out your meal with le ‘Tout Chocolat,’ a trio of chocolate in all its forms : creamy, crunchy, rich and melty. And be sure to pair each course with an appropriate Bordeaux or other selection from the organic wine list.

The ambiance at Paradis provides a good backdrop. The restaurant is spread over two levels, echoing the classy stylings of the 1930s with marble-top tables, leather benches and photos signed Man Ray marking the walls. Soon to be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the place is equally cozy for grabbing coffee and drinks.

We went when the menu was in the beginning stages due to limited kitchen access, but we’re already salivating for more. If you find your recent restaurant excursions crashing and burning or just want to have an exceptional meal without emptying your bank account, head to Paradis, and get lost in gastronomic paradise.

This is where tapas come in. They fall perfectly on the hunger scale — satisfying enough to tide you over and prevent the morning-after effects of ‘Oh I should have eaten something last night instead of drinking my dinner’ but not so filling that you’re worried about ending up in a food coma. And when done correctly, they’re pretty damn good.

Paris is known for its culinary excellence, but the tapas bar remains a foreign concept. Don’t waste your stomach or money on overpriced, unqualified wannabes in centre-ville tourist traps. There’s a new spot in town from the people behind Ze Kitchen Galerie, and it’s the real deal, dishing out beautifully crafted hot and cold tapas that will give you l’envie to try everything on the menu.

Located near Grands Boulevards, which has little to offer in the way of top cuisine or a decent wine selection, Le Bat is the neighborhood’s diamond in the rough, tucked away on boulevard Montmartre with an understated yet enticing contemporary façade.

Lunchtime is already drawing crowds of regulars, who come for its midday menu of more substantial fare, including tartare mains in beef, veal and fish versions, prepared with unconventional ingredients, such as vodka cream, lime-ginger vinaigrette and pickled veggies. Steak fiends will find reprieve in the mouthwateringly tender faux-filet composed of Spanish beef from the region of Galicia and a side of smoked new potatoes.

Le Bat’s secret to success, however, probably lies in its unbeatable happy hour. From 5 to 8 pm, you can order a glass of wine and a tapas plate for a mere 8 euros. Consider the fact that most happy hours get you a pint or a watered-down cocktail for 5 to 6 euros and maybe a cup of stale popcorn, and you’re already leagues ahead of the game.

Post up at the wraparound bar with a front-row view of the open cuisine as Ferrandi alum and former executive chef at KGB, Yariv Berreby, whips up edible masterpieces with fresh, in-season ingredients and a high dose of creativity. Under the amiable direction of Jérôme Taverny, who also made the leap from KGB to launch Le Bat, the place is cozy, friendly and fitting for all occasions, whether en tête-à-tête or among friends.

Order your tapas to share or hoard them if you’re hungry. Among the choices (subject to change, according to season) :

-Roasted eggplant with smoked caviar
-Spiced coco de paimpol and chorizo hummus
-Beef croquettes for dipping in a sweet pepper sauce
-Oysters doused in a carrot-pomegranate vinaigrette
-Chicken confit in a sage-infused curry juice
-Iberian pork slathered in grilled bacon butter
-Cheese stuffed with Muscat grapes and sweet onions

All served with a basket of crusty bread and your choice of red, white or rosé to meld the flavors together. Finish with a hazelnut cream puff pastry or some creamy chocolate soup, and you’ll be in one glorious state of gluttony by night’s end.

And out of the norm it is because if by chance, you end up strolling down the rue de Paradis and find your curiosity aroused by the nondescript entrance to a place that exudes an 80s-style ambiance counteracted with futuristic déco, you will be pleasantly surprised to discover what lies inside.

A sincere smile, for starters, from the band of friendly servers — amateur actors, musicians and artists — all buddies of Afif, the manager, who has garnered enough experience at a handful of La Clique’s hotspots to get to where he is now. He’s also part of the New Age Paris restauration scheme that favors Anglo-saxon friendless over the typical “je m’en foutisme” attitude, so you won’t be complaining about snobby or apathetic service here.

Part resto, part bar, part arcade, Le Fantôme might be the only place where you can eat pizza Al Taglio, accompanied by draft beer, wine or house cocktails, while playing 50-cent pinball or PacMan, among others, and still be surrounded by hip 20- to 30-somethings looking to blow off some steam.

Expect nothing but the best from renowned graphic artist and designer Laurent Fetis. He’s created a distinct forward-looking feel that blends seamlessly with the retrogeeky trinkets interspersed throughout. The wrap-around bar and open kitchen are fitting modern touches.

So if you’re sticking around town in August and in need of some amusement before you go stir crazy and dive into the Seine, here’s a list of reasons to hit up Le Fantôme and ditch your Parisian ennui :

-You’re starving. It’s too hot to cook or you’re feeling lazy : Go there for pizza or high-quality finger foods. Burgers will soon be available in beef, chicken, fish and veggie versions to appease all appetites. Order a salad or tapas if you’re feeling something light, or dig into some fresh burrata — nature,  la truffe or fumé au jambon. Cupcakes, milkshakes and cookies are also on the horizon.

-You have to spend some quality time with G-ma and G-pa, but Sunday brunch sounds agonizing when you’re trying to nurse your hangover from the night before : Take them to Le Fantôme for some boozy Bingo (still a work in progress, but it’s part of the master plan). Well, they can play, so you won’t have to talk much, and you can continue boozing to test out the theory that a beer the next day keeps your hangover away.

-You’ve been holed up in your apartment for too long thanks to PPD, or post-party depression, and you need a place to study, waste time on Facebook or just chill, in order to feel like you did something more productive that day than get delivery food : It’s an ideal place for hanging out at any of the booths or tables, which are nicely spread out so you have plenty of space. When you need a break, you can get up and play some games — it’s like home away from home.

-You need a place to take that hot chick or cool guy you just met, but you don’t want to pick somewhere too cheesy, too loud, or too expensive : What better place for a first date than one that’s completely relaxed, stocked with arcade games to break the ice/minimize awkward moments and offers food and drinks at prices reasonable enough to justify not getting lucky at the end of the night?

Or — if you just want to avoid the grim reaper of boredom paying you a visit during the dead month of August, set aside your fears of the unknown and give Le Fantôme a try, otherwise it might come and haunt you in your dreams.

Once upon a time, Parisians were growing tired of crappy 18-euro hamburgers that consisted of frozen meat patties thawed out, cooked up dry and slapped onto tasteless sesame buns that were probably bought in bulk and equivalent in quality to something you can find at your nearest Ed.

On the other side of the Atlantic, New Yorkers were sitting down to eat 10-dollar gourmet burgers that caused their eyes to roll back, their toes to curl under and their taste buds to quiver with pleasure at the juicy flavor, the inventive toppings and the buns which were given just as much thought as the meat.

So how did Paris resolve its shortage of quality burgers without compromising its loyalty to French ingredients? Someone started a burger revolution.

Since then, it’s Blend this, Big Fernand that and food trucks everywhere, but in the midst of this epic beef battle, newcomer Paris New York has a strategy that sets it apart from the rest.

For starters, the fresh burger joint brings a chunk of authentic New York ambiance to the already lively rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis with its Broadway marquee façade and American diner-style interior. There are no frills, although it retains a certain “divey chic” air that mixes Parisian class with New York edginess.

Another plus is that the place is spread over two levels, so there’s more dining space and less pressure to chow and get out like at many of the other smaller burger spots in town.

Upstairs, an Americana influence persists with black and white film projections from classic cinema playing on the worn cement walls, and there’s a counter for solo diners or coffee/computer junkies.

As for the food, take Le Ponclet Breton Pie Noir beef that’s 3-weeks matured topped with cheddar Somerset cheese aged 18 months and a special “American sauce” (ingredients unknown) on a brioche bun that melts in your mouth like cotton candy, and you won’t question why your plate is clean in less than five minutes.

The clipboard menu is small and simple, but it gets the job done, and if you’re not ready for a relationship with mature beef, sub a crispy chicken patty or portobello mushroom cap for your sandwich. Add some gloriously greasy matchstick fries on the side, a slice of cheesecake for dessert and a Duff beer (yes, the beer from “The Simpsons”) to wash it all down, and you might as well forget about booking that ticket to NYC because PNY has brought it to you.

Once again, the Moussié brothers (who also own Le Floréal, Chez Jeanette, etc) have successfully turned an old, basic PMU into a smart café. Gather a cool clientele around a quality bistro-like menu, put a typical Parisian terrace outside, create a retro-futurist decor with graphic details, add great service, and all in all develop a smart and friendly atmosphere, and you’ll get Le Parisien.

Before you know it, we’ll find you happily seated on designer furniture or wandering around the central zinc bar. It’s already the neighbors’ new hangout, and soon to be yours.

Mussubï’s logo looks like a stylish little pretzel. No, the graphic designer was not a nostalgic Bavarian : “mussubï” is the Japanese word for “to knot”. And the “omusubis” are the flavoured rice balls you will find in your bento at Mussubï – Japanese eat them as snacks, so they are kind of the Nippon version of pretzels. Tidy up in their own square of the bento box, Omusubis are too lovely, waiting politely to be picked up and bitten. To keep them company, no weiß wurst but little portions of colourful dishes – you can choose the meat or veggie option. Mussubï’s bentos change everyday and this Japanese cantine has become the feel-good routine of many neighbourhood’s workers, who just grab their bento away at the office- there is not much space inside. Until now, Mussubï has been opened for lunch from Monday to Friday, but the waitress whispered in a kawai smile that Mussubï’s boss Ms Ishizaka is already thinking of opening at nights, on week-ends and to deliver the bentos at home.

Restaurant Abri (which means shelter in French) – home to said sandwich – is the latest hole-in-the-wall address in the labyrinth of the 10^th.  Operating out of a rather unappealing, sign-less, graffiti marked shop front, you could easily walk past the restaurant without looking twice – but for the line of well-heeled punters queuing up for their scandalously scrumptious Saturday sandwich.

The tiny restaurant, run by Japanese chef Katsuaki Okiyama (who has worked previously at both L’Atelier Joël Robuchon and L’Agapé Substance) turns out competitively priced surprise tasting menus from Tuesday to Friday and souped-up sangas on Saturdays and Mondays.

A four-storey sandwich, a glass of organic wine, and a madeleine to sweeten the load – all for a mere 13 euros.  I personally cannot think of a better place to take shelter on a frosty Saturday afternoon.

Closed in November 2011, the gallery is making a new start in Paris. The ground floor houses a café corner with Oslo coffee imported directly from Brooklyn and a cool selection of art books and magazines, such as Acne Paper, Apartamento, 032c, and Double. On the first floor, there’s a gallery space for shows lasting 2-3 months. The first show was a presentation of Ruvan Wijesooriya’s new book « LCD».

Little brother to Big Fernand, (burger atelier down the way), Little Fernand proves that two is usually better than one when it comes to all things gourmet. The jolly men behind the juicy burger joint are at it again, but this time, they’re serving up glorious hot dogs, which let me tell you, in this city, can be like an oasis in a desert.

Their doors have been open less than twenty days and the enthusiasm is palpable. The smiling and ultra-friendly staff greets eager patrons before they even step foot in the door, and 70’s disco tracks fill up the room with a funky-good-feeling that is starting to become the Fernand-trademark experience. The restaurant is a small, bright space with minimalist décor, and it doesn’t take long for a line to form (luckily, service is speedy). Curious patrons come in surges to experience the American dog crossing paths with the French foodie touch, but remember, since quality reigns supreme here, this is not your average ball park frank. Meuh!, Rrrrr!, Bzzz!, Bêêêê! and Houyouyouille! are the main menu items but if pronouncing them seems too tough a task, you can always build your own based on the array of specially created artisanal ingredients.

Unique sauce recipes, filling toppings, French cheeses and Alsatian imported meats pack a real punch and set this place apart, for sure. The hearty-sized sausage comes served almost like a gift, nestled on a homemade viennois bun inside of a colorful red cardboard sleeve for a tidy, mess-free eating experience. You can’t forget the rest, either. Chips, coleslaw, brownies and Dr. Pepper definitely bring American taste to the palate, if you’re still in the mood for more. Fusing the best of both worlds, French and franks… these guys just might be onto something!
