Last week was the opening of the Jumonki pop up bar, and It might have been a show about nothing but Paris is getting a JUMANJI theme pop-up bar that promises to be really something.
Located in the 2nd district right by the Montorgueil Street, it will be great spot for the movie and cocktails aficionados as the bar will be run by a recent bartender contest winer and powered by the whisky brand Monkey Shoulders. You got 2 weeks to show up !

A few steps away, from the Luxembourg garden, the André Latin hotel launched its cocktail bar imagined by interior designer Michaël Malapert. After a few month of renovation, this latin quarter symbol lift the curtain on a new «dandy»univers, celebrating «André», the owners great grand father a XIXth century dandy. Fir this occasion,  the artists Kylam and Ivan 14 covered  with their graphic drawings the room 669 located, turning it into a real Art room with a stunning view on the Val de Grace.

Last week was the private opening of  the “Très Particulier”. For two nights, the brand new cocktails bar of the Hotel Particulier Montmartre, received friends, press and fashion crowd to celebrate. Oscar Comtet, Hotel CEO, and Pierre Lacroix, Project Architect, host that launching night to present, after over year of thought and architectural work, the birth of their creation. A new nightlife place that old Montmartre probably needed…

And a cavernous converted car tunnel that promises to be the most impressive-looking club in Paris.

The art of eating and drinking in Paris is equally as important as the art practiced by those providing the nourishment. A six-ingredient cocktail, for instance, should be sipped leisurely, not thrown back in one gulp like a shot or guzzled like a beer. A plate of spiced duck tartare with a side of Thai coleslaw should be thoughtfully chewed and savored, not scarfed down like a street crêpe to cure a quick faim. Likewise, the care that goes into creating cocktails and innovative cuisine needs to be skillfully applied by masters of their trade, otherwise known as artisans.

Relative SoPi newcomer Artisan is all about good food and beverage, while providing a classy, relaxed setting for those looking to hone their consumption skills. Opened up by the guys behind La Maison Mère (Thomas Kolnikoff and John Sellam) in collaboration with seasoned bartender Frédéric Le Bordays, the bar is a rustic refuge for neighborhood locals and well-heeled twenty- to thirty-somethings wanting to take the edge off.

Brick and wood accents complement minimalist surroundings with old-fashioned décor, while laid-back tunes and friendly servers make for a chill atmosphere, ideal for hanging out with friends, colleagues or casual dates.

The wraparound bar and high-top tables up front are prime spots for sharing a bottle of natural wine or testing out Frédéric’s imaginative cocktail list, composed of revisited classics and perfected modern recipes. His cocktail prowess runs so deep that he has released his own book, “Les Nouveaux Cocktails Classiques,” which might as well be referred to as the new Bible for budding amateur bartenders.

No apéro is complete without something to munch on, which is where the menu of prepared small plates comes in. The selection encompasses a variety of artfully presented gourmet dishes made with in-season ingredients suitable for all appetites. Currently up for taste testing : Galician mussels with salted butter and spinach, a shaved pile of 16-month matured Jambon de Bayonne, a serving of creamy burrata with tomatoes and roquette relish, a refashioned Croque Signore topped with caponata, ricotta and jambon blanc, and a juicy cut of seared red tuna perched on a bed of niçoise-inspired garnishes, among others.

Unlike the other tapas & cocktail ventures of its kind, Artisan refreshes everything on its menu every three weeks. That means new wines, new beers, new cocktails and new epicurean delicacies to try out each month, and on top of that, the bar is now open for Sunday brunch with a “terre and mer” theme, based around seafood and earthy dishes made with artisanal products.

The 25-euro formule gets you two savory dishes au choix, dessert, a detox cocktail or fresh-squeezed juice and exotic filtered coffee or tea. Pair the parmentier de canard (terre) with a brandade de cabillaud (mer), a homemade waffle with a side of chocolate sauce and Chantilly cream for dessert and a Courgette Power detox cocktail. That plus Tanzanian Arabica espresso, and you’ve found yourself a new haven for Sunday hangovers.

Le Baron crew just announced their artistic take over of one of our favorite places in town: La Pérouse.
Located on the docks of the left bank, La Pérouse is a mythical mansion from the 18^th century that used to be an intellectual hotspot (Victor Hugo and Maupassant, among others, used to hang out here).
In more recent history, this slightly overpriced restaurant (with private dining room) /cocktail club had a random life unworthy of such an amazing setting.
So Le Baron team took on the huge responsibility of doing it the right way.
The plan: a Gentlemen’s club-style piano bar, DJ sets and absinth cocktails…

It might finally be the place on the left bank for a pre-drinking party before the Montana, Castel or Don K,

A lot of expectations, so let’s hope for the best!

A new, discreet cocktail bar has opened its doors in Paris and left us with a good taste in our mouths. Here, the recipe for Lone Palm :

-1 part old-fashioned American charm mixed with modern Parisian class
-Vintage music stock composed of all-vinyl records seasoned with 50s and 60s laid-back surf tunes, jazz-riffed beats and classic oldies (à la Chet Baker or Sinatra)

Shaken, not stirred, the combined ingredients are served in a dimly lit, 1950s retromodern setting (conceptualized by artist Olivier Chiron) that will take you from Paris to Palm Springs in a single gulp.

Concocted by Benoit and Cédric (also of Le Tiki Lounge, their first boozy venture with a Neo-Hawaiian theme), the Lone Palm is a welcome exception among all the other stuffier, slightly more expensive bars à cocktails crowding Paname these days.

Drink prices cap off at 10 euros and drop to 7 for all cocktails during the 6 to 8 pm Happy Hour. That’s a rare gift in a place that uses the same ingredients and liquors as its Parisian counterparts charging the minimum 12 euros a pop.

We recommend the signature Lone Palm, made with a Beefeater gin base that’s brought out by notes of dill, cucumber and lemon zest and enriched with Thai basil syrup, lime juice and a splash of old Jamaican ginger beer.

Or sip on the Salton Sea, a damn good spicy mélange of red pepper and cilantro-infused El Jimador tequila, exotic syrups, lime juice and green tabasco sauce, served in a salt-rimmed Martini glass.

The friendly, plaid-clad barmen put just as much effort and care into the traditional selection of drinks as they do into the invented creations, so should you have a taste for a classic Bloody Mary or Dirty Martini, by all means, drink up.

Located on rue Keller, away from the other ghetto touristy areas of Bastille, Lone Palm is the kind of place where you could take your coworker, girlfriend, boyfriend, new fling, best friend or even your classy Grandpa. Pull up a few stools at the bar or one of the perimeter wall coves. Or if conversation calls for quieter, cozier conditions, get there early enough to snag one of the two booths in back.

If you’ve ever felt like you were born in the wrong era and periodically daydream of Palm Springs or Miami Beach circa 1950, break out your best comb over, stock up on Lucky Strikes, and saunter on over to Lone Palm the next time you need a stiff drink.

Warning label : Booze responsibly. As for the doe-eyed Betty’s at the bar and nostalgic beats in the background ? Not to be consumed in moderation.

Paris is full of places that serve coffee in the morning and cocktails at night. They’re called cafés. But more often than not the coffee is mediocre at best and the cocktails are sugar-coated catastrophes or essentially juice/coke/tonic with a splash of alcohol.

On top of that, when you take your morning coffee at said ‘corner cafés,’ you’re likely to be seated next to Anglophone tourists or others speaking a language you can’t comprehend, and when happy hour rolls around, it’s that crowd plus the broke French teenagers who’ve never drank any cocktail made with more than two ingredients.

All that will change when you discover Lockwood. Consider it your Parisian saloon à la rock ‘n’ roll that plays the Clark Kent/Superman card in the guise of chill, trendy coffee shop by day and swanky yet relaxed cocktail bar by night. It’s an adrenaline rush followed by a smooth comedown.

Owned by the enterprising Lehoux brothers : Olivier (of Le Silencio), Christophe (of Ten Belles and the Brûlerie de Belleville) and Thomas (who’s opened bars in Australia and London), the place reflects a bit of this down south atmosphere — good service, friendly, laid-back and cool.

If you’re a morning person, take advantage of the Belleville coffee brew accompanied by a solid breakfast spread of cakes, tartines and muesli. The stone and wooden enclave with high-top tables and bar seating provides a welcoming, warm ambiance to start your day off with morning reads, web browsing or a pre-work caffeine fix.

When mid-day stomach rumbling occurs, stop in for a crusty sandwich of Mortadella, comté, tapenade and roquette, a steaming onion soup or a satisfying salad of potatoes, bacon, roquette and mustard dressing.

The third act of the day is l’Apéritivo — the lights flicker down to a dimness that makes the already attractive crowd more appealing, the wine bottles pop like balloons, and the bottles dangling from bungee cords give the place an added original touch. Pick your verre of rosé, rouge or blanc, a handcrafted martini, Aperol Spritz or mulled wine (among many others),  and help yourself to the self-serve buffet of munchies to complement your soif.

By 7:30, you’ll be more than ready to shuffle downstairs for more cocktails and small talk with friends or beautiful strangers in surroundings that echo the wood-stone feel of the floor above but with high ceilings and a more tavern-like setting. Rock music dating from the 50s, 60s and 70s provides just the right backdrop for a chill soirée, and the comprehensive cocktail list goes heavy on high-quality whiskeys but with a swig of everything to appease all tastes.

A dinner menu is currently in the works that will feature homestyle bar food, including fried chicken sandwiches, chickpea sandwiches and pork-marinated quesadillas. Weekenders also have biscuits and gravy and Bloody Mary’s to test out.

Whatever your motivation might be for setting foot onto the Lockwood premises, go there to loosen your boot straps and escape from the Parisian wilderness. Because after all, it’s a wild world out there, and sometimes a good whiskey is just what you need to make it go round.

L’Hotel du Temps is all we expect from a trendy hotel: fully booked during fashion week, lo-fi meets art nouveau vibe, actors with their laptops drinking fresh-squeezed orange juice at breakfast, and, of course, a chill piano bar/cave for enjoying cocktails, which can transition into a festive vibe for special occasions, as has happened for parties organized by la Clique or Iconoclast.

This is where tapas come in. They fall perfectly on the hunger scale — satisfying enough to tide you over and prevent the morning-after effects of ‘Oh I should have eaten something last night instead of drinking my dinner’ but not so filling that you’re worried about ending up in a food coma. And when done correctly, they’re pretty damn good.

Paris is known for its culinary excellence, but the tapas bar remains a foreign concept. Don’t waste your stomach or money on overpriced, unqualified wannabes in centre-ville tourist traps. There’s a new spot in town from the people behind Ze Kitchen Galerie, and it’s the real deal, dishing out beautifully crafted hot and cold tapas that will give you l’envie to try everything on the menu.

Located near Grands Boulevards, which has little to offer in the way of top cuisine or a decent wine selection, Le Bat is the neighborhood’s diamond in the rough, tucked away on boulevard Montmartre with an understated yet enticing contemporary façade.

Lunchtime is already drawing crowds of regulars, who come for its midday menu of more substantial fare, including tartare mains in beef, veal and fish versions, prepared with unconventional ingredients, such as vodka cream, lime-ginger vinaigrette and pickled veggies. Steak fiends will find reprieve in the mouthwateringly tender faux-filet composed of Spanish beef from the region of Galicia and a side of smoked new potatoes.

Le Bat’s secret to success, however, probably lies in its unbeatable happy hour. From 5 to 8 pm, you can order a glass of wine and a tapas plate for a mere 8 euros. Consider the fact that most happy hours get you a pint or a watered-down cocktail for 5 to 6 euros and maybe a cup of stale popcorn, and you’re already leagues ahead of the game.

Post up at the wraparound bar with a front-row view of the open cuisine as Ferrandi alum and former executive chef at KGB, Yariv Berreby, whips up edible masterpieces with fresh, in-season ingredients and a high dose of creativity. Under the amiable direction of Jérôme Taverny, who also made the leap from KGB to launch Le Bat, the place is cozy, friendly and fitting for all occasions, whether en tête-à-tête or among friends.

Order your tapas to share or hoard them if you’re hungry. Among the choices (subject to change, according to season) :

-Roasted eggplant with smoked caviar
-Spiced coco de paimpol and chorizo hummus
-Beef croquettes for dipping in a sweet pepper sauce
-Oysters doused in a carrot-pomegranate vinaigrette
-Chicken confit in a sage-infused curry juice
-Iberian pork slathered in grilled bacon butter
-Cheese stuffed with Muscat grapes and sweet onions

All served with a basket of crusty bread and your choice of red, white or rosé to meld the flavors together. Finish with a hazelnut cream puff pastry or some creamy chocolate soup, and you’ll be in one glorious state of gluttony by night’s end.

So, new dives in new dirty areas are needed for hipsters who want to stay together talking about beards, Canadian bonnets, and hip hop… And the answer is le Blue, which just opened! Old school hipsters (David Belloeil, Arthur Castillon, Adrien Moisson…) have taken over the Blue Note, the mythic jazz club between Chateau Rouge and Barbes, two of the dirtiest metro station areas of Paris.

Better than the notorious blue love pills, this spot will restore hipsters’ hope in Parisian nightlife, with the coolest DJs in town, bearded men, cheap booze, a dance floor, neon lights, and girls too wasted to talk. So come try le Blue fast before lamestreamers invade Barbes and open a Barbes Country Club or other preppy themed rock clubs !!

 Go there for a night when you want to rub shoulders with industry types, fashion hounds, laidback locals and fun-loving bobos who are all bored with the same-old same-old spots in its genre.

The tented wraparound bar brings back nostalgic memories of les vacances and is manned by friendly buddies of co-owner Adrien Boissaye. They’ll pour you whatever you need to get yourself back into Paris-mode, whether it’s Corsican beer, organic wine or legit mixed drinks made with top-quality liquors, and they’ll do it all with a smile, putting away your fears of elevated egos despite the high altitude.

 

If you get there early enough (the sooner the better), there’s plenty of space to grab a table and a seat on any of the refurbished chairs, benches or cozy couches, and the industrial structure is softened by kitschy-chic déco, ample plant life and relaxed tunes. You almost feel like you’re escaping to the next Hollywood film set with a panoramic view of Paris, coupled with an easy ambiance for a chilled night out with your crew or a casual tête-à-tête.

Throw in some small plates of pata negra (Iberian ham), Lozère veal tacos and the upcoming addition of mini burgers and New-York-style lobster sammies to tide over your tipsy hunger pangs, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for a 7th heaven hangout on the 7th floor of a nondescript office building in the otherwise hit-or-miss Oberkampf area.

If you feel like splurging, reserve a table at the cozy indoor restaurant (one level below) for a 42-48 euro tasting menu concocted by chef Benoît Dumas who changes it up daily with provincial-inspired dishes served tapas style — special mention for the hand-cut potato crisps topped with slices of perfectly seared tuna and spicy mayo and the Sunday beef ribs paired with seasonal veggies and hand-cut fries. With the resto’s NYC ambiance to counter the Parisian skyline above, the equation for seamless seduction is complete : Full stomach + 360° view of Paris + drinks = high potential for post-dinner coquetry.

Don’t be discouraged by the falling leaves and cold weather creeping its way in because there are plans for a huge fireplace on the terrace (for heating and wood-fired pizza-making purposes), outdoor heaters, fleece blankets and the addition of a bar on restaurant level with a carte de cocktails that will be sure to provide you with all the boozy warmth you need to survive until the beaux jours return.
