detox watermelon

Summer is fast approaching in Paris, so in anticipation of weather that calls for less clothing and torrid affairs, it might be a good time to trade in the booze for vegetable juice and cleanse your body before summer debauchery sets in. We’re not talking about starvation tactics or turning to coffee and cigarettes for survival. Just be a bit more mindful of what you’re putting in the tank. Try out the Ten Days tour of top 5 detox spots, and eat your way back to a summer six pack.

Supernature

Super fresh. Super ingredients. Super good for you. Whether your idea of healthy involves a refreshing puréed mint pea soup, an organic cheeseburger or a vegetarian variety plate composed of a crunchy cereal galette, raw veggies, sprouts and fig-infused goat cheese, your stomach will thank you for feeding it lightly after months of caloric winter indulgences. You won’t leave hungry, however. Portions are legit and satisfying. The non-traditional Sunday brunch is also worth a chew, with a detox option that is bio from drink to dessert and offers something other than eggs and potatoes to heal your hangover. Lines form fast, so get there early or take away from the Comptoir a few doors down.

Terroirs D’Avenir

If you can’t afford astronomical prices for a gastronomic meal, cook for yourself with the same high-quality ingredients. Situated in the 2nd arrondissement on the petite rue du Nil, Terroirs d’Avenir is a trifecta of top-notch food retailers : an épicerie, a poissonnerie, and a boucherie. Owners Samuel Nahon and Alexandre Drouard have been supplying some of Paris’s best restaurants (Septime, Frenchie) for years with products from local French growers. Their finds are rare and affordable, which is a rarity in itself. Get your veggies in with some Pontoise cabbage and Pardailhan turnips. Then hit up the butcher shop for succulent organic milk-fed lamb from the Pyrénées, wild duck, matured chickens or various cuts of pork from Kintoa (Basque region of France). If red meat’s not your thing, raid the seafood section, which offers freshly arrived fish from Saint Jean de Luz or l’île d’Yeu. Round out your meal with the right spices, high quality cheese and natural wine, and you’ll have everything you need for a Michelin-star meal in the comfort of chez vous.

Nubio

Forget the lemon juice and cayenne pepper diet. Try Nubio, an organic juice detox designed to eliminate toxins from your body, recalibrate your digestive system and reduce your cravings for the bad stuff. You can either pick up your juices at the Paris-located atelier or have them delivered to your door. More than four kilos of fresh fruits and veggies are pressed for one day’s worth of nutrition. The liquid produce is then mixed with fresh herbs, spices and superfoods to create rich flavors in satisfying meal replacements. Depending on your needs, you have the choice of a 1-, 3- or 5-day cure in two options : La Cure Nouveau Départ or La Cure Intense. Both versions consist of drinking 6 bottles of fruit and veggie juices per day in varied combinations. Spinach, romaine lettuce, apple, parsley, lime and rosemary ? It might sound kind of gross on paper, but pressed and juiced, it’s refreshing and flavorful. If you’re hesitant, test out the spring/summer elixir set first. The three recipes have a citrus-fruit base infused with flowers and fresh-pressed herbs. In the grand scheme of everything, one day or several of drinking your calories (in juice, not booze) isn’t going to hurt you. And at the very least you’ll get rid of a bunch of toxins in order to make room for new ones…

Go there : For a semi hard-core solution when you feel like your body is in serious need of reform

Guen Mai :

A Parisian institution for the health-conscious, Guen Mai is part-shop, part-restaurant offering a mostly vegan organic menu with a few fish dishes to please the flexitarians out there. The outer façade is deceptively understated and more closely resembles a stand-alone health supplement store or bio épicerie. But it would be a shame to pass up lunch at the macrobiotic restaurant inside, as the Japanese-inspired health dishes are enough to attract the likes of celebrities, including Natalie Portman and are filled with foods that won’t make your body look like a used punching bag nor feel like one. Dining out is hard enough with the overabundance of heavy meats, butter-soaked vegetables and pounds of cheese used liberally in typical restaurant cuisine. So it’s a real breath of fresh food you’ll be inhaling off of copious plates packed with raw, cooked, grated or chopped veggies, spring rolls, veggie tarts, brown rice, millet, tofu noodles and daily specials, among which we recommend the steamed fish, Seitan brochettes or the pillowy Tofu ravioli. And why not hit up the dietetic épicerie on your way out for some agave syrup or tamari to continue your health kick at home ?

Go there : For when you’re craving Asian-style food that won’t bloat you up like a steamed dumpling

With : Yourself or a vegetarian business associate you need to impress
