John our winner let us a few words and pictures of his 3 nights in Napoli at the Albergo di Purgatorio

Opposite Sorbillo, arguably the best pizzeria in the world lies Albergo di Purgatorio, arguably the world’s most eccentric hotel. Push through a secluded, unmarked door and you will discover a bombastic baroque courtyard where Petr, the cheery concierge will receive you. A magnificent stone staircase leads you up to what can only be described as an aristocratic artists’ recluse. More apartment than hotel room, one is immediately struck by the height of the ceilings and the mountain of obscure literature plonked in the centre of the living room. The decor is eclectic in the extreme, but like the most bohemian of artists, its ramshackle appearance has a seductive charm. Warm Neapolitan evenings can be whiled away reading in perfect silence, the perfect foil for daytime explorations of the narrow, scooter-stressed streets of Naples.

Top Two Spots:

My two favourite spots are a stone’s throw from one another and make for an essential lunchtime pilgrimage for any self-respecting gourmand…

1. Oseteria da Tonino, Via Santa Teresa a Chiaia, 47

Founded in 1880, one get’s the impression that not much has changed since then – and thank goodness.  Try the salsiccia e fiorelli (sausage and broccoli) a Neapolitan classic.

2. Moccia, Via San Pascuale 21

For the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted, head down the hill to Moccia. They also have a mind-boggling selection of pastries. Wash down with a piping hot, treacly coffee at the bar.
