Last year if you were at le Carmen until it closed, you could hear shouts of “Let’s go to l’Embuscade! Who’s for l’Embuscade?” Once there, you could see a family-run rum bar, with a TV broadcasting RFO, a child sleeping on the sofa, and some drinks served with strange twists–like octopus-infused rum, or turtle penis rum. And if you didn’t believe it was real octopus, the guy show would show you the bottle with the actual octopus inside. Buzz around the place started because at one point some guys ran into Lionel, the owner of le Baron, at le Carmen and he told them it was his favorite bar. It immediately became  the cool after-party for visitors to le Carmen and le Mansart, to avoid the crowd and the music of Chez Moune or the taxi fees to escape Pigalle.

A few weeks ago Lionel bought l’Embuscade, adding it to his list of nightlife spots that includes le Baron (Paris/London/NYC/ Tokyo), Chez Moune, la Fidelité, etc… The bar is much cleaner, the TV and the child sleeping on the sofa have disappeared, and the weird rum bottles are not longer on the cocktail menu. Now we can expect musical performances, cocktails that don’t make you sick, and (who knows?) maybe a fashion week after-party.
