Behind the distinctly grotty place de Clichy hides this rather unusual establishment, a breath of fresh air after the touristy galleries of Montmartre. The building itself was a legendary dance hall and brothel in the 1920s. After careful restoration, Le BAL opened in September 2010 as a gallery specialising in documentary-style photography and film. The place also has a bookshop and a cafe, where the ex- Rose Bakery staff whip up surprisingly good tapas-style dishes with a “Breeteesh” touch. The cafe, with its secluded terrace full of arty, thoughtful types, is great for people-watching.
