Dumplings and beer

This one-dish wonder tucked away in the curious Passage des Panoramas gives new meaning, and style, to bar food in Paris. Cooler than its Rue St. Anne counterparts, cheaper than its neighbours, Gyoza Bar is a little oasis in the dine-out desert of Grands Boulevards. The restaurant reflects a sleek minimalist design, with only 12 seats around a large, rectangular wooden counter. On the menu, there’s just one main dish: gyoza, or Japanese dumplings, in portions of 8 or 12 (there are also sides of steamed rice and marinated soybeans). But these aren’t average traiteur ravioli. Everything is prepared fresh and in-house, from the filling made of ginger, leeks, pork, and yuzu to the special dipping sauce, spiked with lemon and grapefruit. The restaurant’s steam-fry technique ensures that each dumpling comes out as crispy and delicate as the dozens before it. This is Japanese simplicity and precision at its finest. We especially dig the decent prices, Yobisu and Kirin in the bottle, and friendly service provided by Japanese cuties.
