This is the greatest exhibition of the year. In a lush sanctuary of blues, greens, and wealth hang the œuvres of history’s greatest painters, the jewels of Cartier, Dior, Piaget, and the antique furniture looking to be straight out Napoleon’s bedroom.

These are the things that most don’t even realize exist outside of museums.

Miró, Warhol, miniature Calders, full size Calders. 18th century art that seems to sooner belong in the Louvre, and 13th century pieces that appear hand-picked out of Italy’s greatest collections.

The Biennale des Antiquitaires is a pure delight for the senses as the presence of thousands of fresh roses fills the room to the sound of the turning fountain.

This is a lifestyle, an exercise in rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s wealthiest collectors of material luxury.

Set back further from the art galleries stand les Maisons de la Haute Joallerie. Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, you will overhear, “Yes, that is the largest pillow-cut that currently exists in the world.” Jewelry prices are casually mentioned at “just over half a million”, then “4.7 mil…”.

Half of the visitors come to see an immense amount of history and a vast amount of the world’s most precious cultural materials pulled together at once. The other half come to shop.

Suddenly the Cartier pieces exhibited months earlier in the very same museum as pieces of history are set on the market before your eyes, immediately changing their cultural value to commodity.

Perhaps jewels were always meant for the market. To similarly sell paintings, though, works into which the greatest players in our human history have poured their souls, one must beg a question of artistic morality. Art is pure, and money can be extraordinarily dirty.

Perhaps it would be normal, you start to imagine, to hang a Kandinsky or early Braque cubist piece in your living room. A 14th century Mary sitting primly between two Richters. A book signed “To Picasso, from Braque” on your bookshelf. Monets in the hallway picked up on the last trip to Paris.

The Biennale remains an incredibly special look into a private market, a pool of precious art that is never bound for the public eye. This is what the path of true wealth leads to. Dive in.

Over 30 galleries held openings to kick off the rentrée and wake up our senses after long summers outside the city. Here are our top 5 must-see gallery exhibitions.

Anna Gaskell – Douglas Gordon / Vampyr

Never before has a classic story come so shockingly to life within the white walls of an art gallery. Dark photographs, smashed stage lights, limbs of dead swans emerging from the walls, taxidermy wolves gnarling in the gallery corners. A fantastic Black Swan nightmare. The enveloping sense of darkness captivates the mind. Not only is the show brilliantly executed from an aesthetic viewpoint, the sense of motion within the space is remarkable. Even the still images lend to what becomes a mad trip through an obsessive nightmare.

Yvon Lambert
108, rue Vieille du Temple
75003 Paris
Open: Sept. 6- Oct. 25 // Tuesday-Saturday 10am-7pm
Métro: Filles du Calvaire

Jules de Balincourt / Blue Hours

Each of de Balincourt’s paintings whisper their stories in the language of color, and subtly they move to life. The bold blocks of paint come together to create silent scenes of human interaction. The images immediately feel comfortable and softly realistic despite the clear lack of ambition towards photo-like reality.

A particular stand-out piece offers an enormous portrait with tiny boats sailing through the blue background and visage alike. The eyes speak of distrust, an air of having to watch his own back, and softly scribbled in red reads “misfit island”. The piece evokes a subtle prose of vulnerability and timeless human emotion.

Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac
7, rue Debelleyme
75003 Paris
Open: Sept. 6- Oct. 18 // Tuesday-Saturday 10am-7pm
Métro: St. Sébastien Froissard

Laurent Grasso / Soleil Double

With the waning summer sun pouring through the front doors, two natural, pure bronze circles hang side by side on the gallery wall. Next to them, written in an impossible blue neon within a deep black box, stand the words soleil double, double sun. To see the natural perfection of the two “suns” rest dictated by an unnatural human invention, neon, creates an immediately captivating contradiction.

Throughout the other gallery halls are pinned small depictions of medieval scenes of catastrophe, often with sudden surreal interjections. Other more nouveau-style pieces dot the exhibition, juggling the viewer between “then” and “now”.

Ultimately, the exhibition plays on a concept created by Grasso of a hidden second sun that wreaks havoc and pulls negative events to earth. He begs one to question the limits of reality, the possibility of alternate realities, and, if only temporarily, remodel our experience of today’s reality.

Galerie Perrotin
76, rue de Turenne
75003 Paris
Open: Sept. 6- Oct. 31 // Tuesday-Saturday 11am-7pm
Métro: St. Sébastien Froissard

David Goldblatt / Structures of Dominion and Democracy

Contrasting so many of Marian Goodman’s grand exhibitions, Structures of Dominion and Democracy sets up a subtle commentary on a piece of history that often goes untalked about. At the base of the exhibition stands one of Goldblatt’s major bodies of work, in which he explores architecture in colonial South Africa and its revelatory nature of the people and the times. Shortly after the rise to power of Nelson Mandela and democracy, Goldblatt began photographing new structures created by the new society, thus assembling a second series parallel to the first.

Side by side, the two series of soft black and white photographs point to stories of pain and rejuvenation in South Africa. The photographs appear almost hauntingly peaceful. They do not depict riots or acts of heinous violence, but instead quietly point to the aftermath of historical events of pain and unjust discrimination. Goldblatt once again reminds us of the ever-present human propensity towards war against one another.

Marian Goodman
79, rue du Temple
75003 Paris
Open: Sept. 6- Oct. 18 // Tuesday-Saturday 11am-7pm.
Métro: Rambuteau

Multiple Artists / Dans Un Intérieur

In perfect step with Paris Design Week, Gallerie Almine Rech poses the ever-relevant question on the boundary between art and function. This exhibition of furniture, murals, and textiles not only manifests as a colorful, aesthetically delicious discourse on design, but calls the viewer-turned-user in closer to the art to relate to on more domestic and personal terms.

When touching, moving, sitting on, walking on art, an emotional connection is immediately established between the artist and viewer, as that immediately the viewer/user has understood and come into proximity with the purpose of the creation.

Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, De Stijl. Throughout art history there stand distinctive periods where fine artists take function design into their agenda of work. Perhaps now is the dawn of yet another era.

*Featured Artists: John Armleder, Mark Barrow & Sarah Parke, Matthias Bitzer, John Currin, Ayan Farah, Frank Gehry, Mark Hagen, Max Lamb, Peter Peri, Christopher Schanck, Francesco Vezzoli, Brent Wadden, Franz West, and Japanese Boros.

Last musical event of the summer before september, Porto Vecchio Festival took place last weekend on the magnificent beach of Santa Giulia, in the south of Corsica. Enchanted with the only decoration: Hot sand, turquoise sea, pine and Corsican maquis in the background. Idleness program, lives and mojitos. ! After Calvi On The Rocks, Havana Club Mojito Embassy moved to Santa Giulia with its concept of ephemeral bar run by a team of expert bartenders Mojitos. A workshop DIY (Do It Yourself) offered festival-goers to learn to realize the true Cuban cocktail (in moderation of course) according to the traditional recipe. Musically, from the afternoon DJs perched on the Havana Club bar set fire to sunset before the real show begins. The explosive line-up of Porto Vecchio Festival held goers awake until dawn with particular lives of Woman, young rockers Casablancas, Vitalic, Cat Cat, the crazy trio Naive New Beaters and a DJ set from Alex Taylor one of the members of Hot Chip to close the three-day celebrations. Roll on next year!

Stuck in Paris this summer and in need of some desperate holiday vibes? Well at just a stones throw away from the centre comes the latest summer essential chill-out bar and restaurant…La Passarelle! It’s only been created by the same owners as the trendy hotspots Le Perchoir so you know it’s gonna be good…

It’s nice to get away…
Get out of Paris without actually leaving Paris! Situated at the Quai du Point du Jour in Boulogne, La Passerelle is a refreshing get-away from the city noise and hoards of sunburnt tourists. These Perchoir boys love a good view, which is exactly what they deliver here. The Eiffel Tower, La Seine and a beautiful forest are all at your disposal to drool over and appreciate Paris in all its glory in the sizzling summer sun. Furthermore this place attracts a pretty attractive bobo crowd so your eyes will be kept alive all day and all night.

I’m on a mother-effing boat!
Fuck land you’re on a boat and the docked boat that is La Passerelle is one of the coolest inside the Parisian playground. Their ‘Made in Bali’ style of décor of large wicker armchairs, restored wooden tables, hammocks, its large open terrace and a bitchin beach style bar will take you to Bali and beyond. Prepare to get comfy folks.

Bitching Bali BBQ Baby
Who doesn’t love a good BBQ? Even better a BBQ that is influenced by Bali and South American cuisine taking your taste buds somewhere they’ve never been before. Marinated meat kebabs, grilled fish and salads make up the delightful menu. Or try out the bad ass BBQ formule with friends for 40 euros.

Juicy and Fresh
The taste of summer is ready and waiting. Expect copious amounts of freshly chilled rosé and a plethora of juicy cocktails to quench your thirst. In quintessential hipster style, your cocktail of choice will be served in a cute little jam jar containing the freshest ingredients around.

Open Monday through Sunday La Passarelle is definitely worth your time this summer!

Also producing & performing as one half of TNGHT, it’s been a while since the Canadian artist has put out any new music officially, but with such a busy jet-set DJing schedule it’s not hard to see why.

From the good people of Pink Flamingo, Floyd’s Bar and Grill is bringing a healthy dose of American BBQ culture to the sad kebab stands of Strasbourg Saint-Denis.

In front, you’ll enter a dark, handsome cocktail bar. But make your way back and you’ll suddenly find yourself in a bright and airy dining room, almost like a chic Route 66 pit stop.

The menu is nostalgic with only the best of the US: grilled-corn chowder, prime rib (for two), Kansas City ribs, pecan pie, bourbon bread pudding, and cheesecake… Who says Americans don’t make good food? There is just one “so-British” exception: the giant roast they serve up on Sundays.

The Oysters Rockefeller are a must-have. For the more adventurous, we recommend the “Rabbit & Waffle,” which would make Roscoe’s wish they had thought of it first. At Floyd’s, chef Jamie Young is aiming for one thing: glory cooking. Does he succeed? Hands down, because those Kansas City ribs are finger lickin’ good.

Summertime sadness be gone with you! Its swelteringly hot again which means outdoor bars, restaurants and partying are essential to survive the summer in pretty Paris. Fancy a change from Nuba and Wanderlust? Yeah thought so. Check out their new refreshingly fun neighbor Le Playtime located just a few doors down at 36 quai d’austerlitz.

Why should you go?

Because it pretty much has everything that’s why. It’s on a boat on the Seine, food, bar, restaurant, club and wait for it…even a small pool to dip your toes into when you feel that summer sweat coming on or if you’re really just gagging to show off that summer bod you’ve been prepping all year for! So don’t forget your bathing suits boys and girls and have no fear, the normal Parisian rules of tight speedos and bathing caps do not apply!

Replenish yourself!

Summer time eating means good fresh food alongside some juicy fruity drinks that will keep you hydrated/liquored up enough to last all night. Le Playtime delivers this need perfectly with a menu of grilled meats, healthy salads and a selection of drinks to drool over. One recommends the brochette porc au caramel with a large spritzer on the side. Sweet and meaty just the way you like it! Oh and if you still have room in that little stomach of yours then take the cheesecake for dessert…mmmmmmm.

Party, Party, Party!

If swimming and eating isn’t enough then head downstairs where you will find the cocktail bar and dance floor. Open till 2am Monday – Saturday, expect a Wanderlust/Nuba style of crowd to dance with to the latest Parisian summer sounds.

All in all if you want a cosy, chilled, down to earth and deliciously refreshing summer vibe with a beautiful setting then head to Le Playtime where the name really does sum it up!

When traveling, we carry with us a suitcase filled with the few things we consider too much a part of us to leave behind. What happens, though, when the suitcase itself gets left behind?

Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota has taken over Galerie Daniel Templon with an instillation piece compiled of a crowd of old suitcases cascading down from the ceiling. Collected in the artist’s hometown of Berlin, each valise has trapped the lost spirit of his owner. Vitality rattles the entire installation.

Some cower in the back, some kneel before you. The immediate energy, though, is confronting. You take a step back, and every one has begun talking and asking questions at the same time.

Some of the suitcases literally shake from their strings, making the eerie sound of ghosts calling to still be heard. Those that are motionless, though, remain uncomfortably loud. The piece stands firmly before you, looking with eyes full of tears and eyes full of excitement. Masculine, feminine, some timid, some tired. All stand before you with a story.

Equally moving and incredibly potent, the suitcase installation is met and balanced out by a series of 10+ sculptures. Described as an “accumulation of objects, portraits, moments of life frozen in the threads of time,” the series delves into existential questions on the human mind and that which can only be sensed.

Tied up in string within metal frames, objects hang in mid-air, getting lost in the energy we put into what is “ours” and “carries memory.” Tangible, but outside of art, invisible. They speak of our inability to untangle the energy and amount of ourselves that we put into objects from the objects themselves.

The largest in the series is an outspread creamy white kimono, majestic behind the confines of its black web. An angel-like imagery is conjured, as if the kimono could fly away if not having already been captured by the opposing energy. The black, obscuring, impermanent human aspect beautifully juxtaposes that which is white and transcendent of this world.

Also significant in the series are a corresponding black and white set of geometric sculptures. The thread weaves around the metal bars, but incapsulates nothing. They are visually captivating, sharp, aggressive. They evoke broken glass bouncing back up into the air after shattering on the ground.

They are shattered energy. Falling apart, but inextricably tied together.

The final chef-d’œuvre are two round mirrors tied up in the energy of the black threads, begging the question: what energy am I entangled in? Do I see myself in the mirror or do I only see the energy that I confuse to be “me”? Is escape possible?

The Sad Walli SS15 Presentation took place over the weekend in the hot hot heat of PFW. The presentation juxtaposed architectural purity with graphic cuts, tailored perfection and chiseled jaw lines. Barefoot models floated choreographically throughout the showroom, as buyers ogled the collection while tightly clenching their frosty cans of Heineken! POw POW Sad Walli for a fantastic visual feast !!

Ultra-cool Marais coffee shop and concept store The Broken Arm has invited curators Thomas Erber and Antoine de Beaupré to present 12X21, an all-summer photography exhibition.

Featuring a collection of 15 photographs by 15 world-renowned artists, 12X21 brings together an exhibition of unstoppable energy.

Each piece, charged with (at times ironic) sexual tension, has achieved an incredible compositional balance. Sonia Sieff’s “Les Jambes Des Femmes Sont Des Compas” echoes of raw sex, dripping with electronic heartbreak. The contrasting image “The Garden” by Elina Kechicheva sings of past summer days of water gun fights and real family feuds all played out in the American back yard. Shocking or intimate, each photograph carries enormous and exciting potency.

Within the setting of The Broken Arm, where this season Marni hangs near Alexander Wang sandals and Carven kicks, the youthful energy plays together to create the most intoxicating photography exhibit in Paris this summer.

Next time you’re planning lunch or coffee with a friend, make The Broken Arm your go-to spot. The art is alive, the food is delectable, and the rest of the shop is absolute eye candy. Or perhaps the next new thing to go in your closet.
